It goes to your head!

It's nice to find these little refreshing nuggets of hope.

Bisleri a popular bottler of mineral water produces a 5Liter bottle that is returnable.
The full bottle is Rp55 and a Rp20 refund is given to you when you return it to the retailer. Tops!
Rp35 for 5L is our kind of price.

It gets better.
We are relaxing on a Goan beach at the moment (Patnem) and a restaurant here refills your water bottles with triple filtered water for a measly charge of Rp3 per litre.
Good work Blue Planet.

Now where was I??? Ahh yes... Beach.

Paper Bottle
Finally an answer to the mountainous plastic bottle problem you see everywhere.

Brand-Image

Which reminds me, we have been re-using our plastic bottles for almost 2months now. One is from Laos and the other is Cambodian... Time for a replacement maybe.
Not sure how the paper will handle the elements while strapped to the bike though.

You see the strangest things.
What would you think if you saw this park up next to you?

Well it kind of took us by surprise too. I was fascinated by the attention to detail in neatly loading that many empty oil containers in one tiny ute.
I'm not sure how many were there but I had to get a closer look.

It's hard to imagine anyone could go through so much lubricant. Even our bike is a bit thirsty in this department of late but how many kilometers would you have to do to use this much?

As I was snapping away the owner came out to meet me.
He explained that every month he collects the bottles and melts them down to sell off again.
I couldn't work out what the final material was used for but he gestured down to his feet when I asked.
Shoes maybe?
Door mats perhaps?
Tarmac Additive?
Sewer piping?
Land fill?

Who knows, but 10/10 for effort and a kind fellow to boot.

Cant Touch This Rain-gear

We bought these poncho's in Perth for a cheap price and foolishly believed they would adequately keep us dry while riding in the rain, plus complete the look that we were striving for... Sad isn't it?
It wasn't until we got near Jakarta that we needed them and it was immediately apparent that they were crap. Well at least mine was, the wind ripped it in half and it didn't keep my creaking knees dry at all.

So one quiet evening Aki decided to do something about it. Armed just with a tiny pair of nail clippers, 2rolls of gaffer-tape and a good imagination she was able to whip me up some rain-dacks in under an hour.

Initially I was skeptical but after a trial run in heavy rain I can assure you they do indeed keep all the important bits dry.
What do you think?

MC Hammer and Bruce Lee together again in harmony.

Wor-ta-lie-fu
Both in Penang and Melaka we found these Purified Water Vending Machines.
You simply supply the bottle, the coin, press the OK button and out flows cool clear drinking water...

So cheap even the homeless guys use these things... It ticks all the right boxes and if it gets their seal of approval then its probably pretty close to our budget too!!!

Harvest Moon/Food for Unthought
I guess you have worked out by now that we love food. In fact its now become one of the main reasons we seek out new places to go... To try their local delicacies.
Its also easy to work out that I'm a big fan of maps and charts so here is one that ticks all those boxes but unfortunately gives me oral hygiene concerns.

It documents teeth health for 35-44yearolds worldwide. Australians have quite a bad rating don't they? Its OK though where I am at the moment they sell super strong HALAL toothpaste... Im sorted.

I am concerned though with many things other than my expanding waist line. What is the biggest worry of mine is the increase of energy crops. Its easy to see what's happening here in Malaysia (in Indonesian Java and Sumatra too).
Large swaths of native forest are continuing to be felled to make way for Palm Oil plantations, of which only a very small amount processed is for the food industry. The worldwide environmental effects of removing this native cover is pretty clear but what I find really sad is the way it ends up being used.
Is the future really going to be what this site is predicting?

Will the fertile(enough!) land be used to produce fuel for our rich lifestyles or be used to grow food for our poor stomachs?
There is only so much land we have to work with after all, especially if we continue having babies at the current rate.

The serious question has to be asked...

Will we have to start sending John Deere Tractors into outer space?

Non-French, Potable, Very Cheap Drinking Water
Water is such a precious liquid and vital for life. Its not my line I don't want it, but I'm sure you've heard it a gazzilion times before.
Its not until I came to Asia that I realized just how precious it actually is, in some places it's 3times the price of petrol. The price doesn't stop foreigners from purchasing, consuming and disposing at least one of these ghastly vessels a day though, resulting in among other things, mountains of empty plastic bottles that you can be sure will never be recycled.
It really is a horrible picture isn't it?
The mountains of waste I mean, not the tourists!!!
Financially and Environmentally Aki and I have hit on a winning strategy that keeps us both hydrated and the earth a little cleaner.

Take our US$2 pot,, 3Litres of the local tap water, my old Coleman Dual Fuel stove, 10minutes boiling time and you have near perfect drinking water.
To add the final loving touch and to remove the smaller microbes you need to get the nearest bikini clad babe to pump vigorously with my trusty MSR water filter.

What you end up with is 3Litres of water that you swear is tastier than anything packaged anywhere near a French source... True!

This method has saved us heaps of money and has gotten us many “admiring” looks too. We are in Malaysia now and are still drinking from a bottle we bought in Java 2months ago. I think it is time for an upgrade though, it fails to hold its shape any longer.

1Litre of Fuel boils over 40Litres of Drinking Water. You do the math.

Oils 'Aint Oils No Longer!

You know, I thought that we were doing alright in the quest to travel the world on our little 4-stroke Honda. I'd convinced myself that there was no way anyone could travel more eco-friendly or more cheaply on a motorized vehicle than us. Albeit the bike is superbly economical on fuel, carries both of us and our gear, uses no excess oil and its manufacture probably has quite a low carbon footprint too, but then I got wind of this guy...

The BioDiesel Adventure

Shusei is traveling the planet in a modified Landcruiser that runs on BioDiesel... Yeah yeah yeah, I thought that too but the twist is he is processing all his own fuel, right there in the back of the vehicle. And all the base WVO is donated by people he meets along the way. Check out his web page and keep track of how he is going. Hopefully one day our paths will cross with Shusei and I'll shout him some fish and chips...

Yeah thats pretty green and stuff but I was thinking, is that fuel really free? I mean someone has to buy it and use it first right? Not to mention the processing costs at the factory. I want something FREE, you know rock bottom, cheaper than walking free.
Check this guy out.

Solar Taxi

He is traveling the world solely by the power of the sun. Cant get much cheaper than that can you, his daily energy costs just about make us blush. He picks people up as he goes along too... I wonder if he has room in his trailer for the bike?

The message these guys are sending out is an admirable one, this planet is in trouble and needs our immediate help. But its clear these guys have big money and support behind them, and this is definitely the message Aki and I want to stamp out completely. Responsible tourism and environmentally sound transport is well within the reach of all people no matter what your budget.

These guys have got it bang on in my opinion.

Get out there the right way.
