People Power Bangla Stylee
I think I may have mentioned before about how eco-friendly Bangladeshi transport is. Don't get me wrong, there are still too many cars on the road in Dhaka but many things are being done to reduce congestion and pollution.

These electric tuktuks are handmade and pretty agricultural but it sends out the right message no? Yeah I know, electric vehicles are only as good as the source from which that power comes... I don't think Bangladesh has wind or solar networks yet but 10points for going this far.
This guy was pretty proud of his ride...

A peek under the skirt!

Throughout Asia Iron Buffalo(Motorized Plough) outfits are used for all kinds of things. Originally designed to replace the traditional tilling role of the buffalo animal with petrol guzzling, C02 spewing mechanics, for better or for worse things are finally changing. Humans being human have adapted these machines to do much more than just plough rice paddies though! In Thailand they even Drag Race them (I wish I could find a picture of that).
You see them retro-fitted into handmade trucks...

As the work horse in heavy duty trikes...

Even bolted into converted Rickshaws for lazy Wallahs!!!

Ingenuity is everywhere and the possibilities are seemingly endless. These guys strapped a crude sound system to their trike. Not sure what they were selling but it had impact for me...

This guy hired out a rickshaw for the whole day to bust out rhymes on the streets of Rangpur...

Rickshaws themselves come in a variety of flavours but they always have elaborate images painted on their backsides. Usually of busty women and men with moustaches.
In Rajshahi though things are a little more aggressive, we were on the run from the cops but managed to snap these two shots. The busty women and hirsute men are toting arms... The police more so.

Just near Patgram we saw these kids being taken home in a pedal powered cage. Wish my school bus was like this...

And to bring it all home, I'm a sucker for low tech bike mods. Especially when fitted to Honda Cubs...

Navigation Without Batteries.
We travel simply. With equal parts luck and humour we have managed to bumble our way across the landscape pretty much unscathed.
GPS for all its worth has yet to have an effect on our travel goals. I refuse to buy one for many reasons but mainly because I'm kind of allergic to products that chew up batteries.

Our main MO so far has been taking roads on a whim and generally following our instincts. Aki has a keen sense of finding good lodging and food... I on the other hand always seem to take routes that end up testing us in one way or another. At times it is tough yes but I just cant bring myself to shell out for maps of any sort, although I know one of us secretly wishes I would.

I would seriously reconsider my self-inflicted suffering if I could get my hands on one of these beauties...

Ananova

Of course it will need to have scrolls available for the places on our itinerary. Dhakar, Bagasra, Esfahan, Baku... What do you think?
Fetching.

I wonder if I'll get a ticket for using this while riding with one hand.

Too Much...
We've been doing it for years.

Why should now be any different?

Less than 4wheeled Transport Round-up
Could have used this in the cold mountains of Laos!

Theresa Honeywell

I'm not ashamed to admit it, I love outfits...
Not the costume type of outfit you're thinking of.
Sidecar type outfits attached to bikes are what I'm talking about here.

Here's a cute little homemade hack on a 100cc Honda stepthrough I saw in Sisaket...

Good use of scavenged swingarm and suspension parts.

This heavy duty people mover was spotted in Sukhothai...

So over engineered that the thing took some heavy throttle action to get moving, that was without passengers. I didn't risk jumping aboard but the owner told me a local guy makes them from scratch using new imported Chinese power plants.

Saw an older one, later that day, in an emergency braking procedure. No front brakes just a rear drum between you and eternity... Scary.

Eyed off this brand new factory built tray-front parked outside a Honda shop...

Quite light and so versatile, you could use it to carry anything you want.

Not sure what this guy was selling...

But he looked mighty happy out on the road!

To prove the fact that almost anything can be done on a stepthrough, This guy had an arcade game bolted to the back of his...

Couldn't quite work out how to win once dropping coin though...

Un-Caged Destruction

Roadside display showing how many fatal accidents in the region over the last month.
(Golden Triangle)

Throughout Thailand and Laos we are constantly reminded of how dangerous the roads can be for bike riders. White outlines of bodies and bikes are a common sight on the tarmac, especially on tight bends. The main factors are that no-one rides with helmets and few bikes have headlights, making a short night ride on a winding mountain road a certain dance with death.

In Cambodia there seems to be less sign of carnage but this could be due to the white spray paint not sticking to the dirt roads very well and the fact that it is illegal to ride with your headlight on, so everyone is a little more alert.

Who knows really why there are so many casualties in this part of Asia. One thing is for sure, we are getting well practiced in making emergency maneuvers and finding quick escape routes

Trang Transport Round-up

Spotted this classic C90 out the front of a shop. All OG and untainted, this thing is in better nick than our bike.

Here's a hotrod just waiting to happen. TukTuk stylee!

Cool taxi/bus/sled/woody hybrid. The best roofrack I've seen in ages.

And to leave you all with that warm cuddly feeling... This enterprising young lad was selling (or more disturbingly, displaying) his plush toy collection out the back of his hatch. He was very happy I took an interest in his layout.

Chicara Art

There's no way I could ride this for more than 5minutes without getting sore but I could stand and look at it for hours on end.
The desire factor is very high. I just have to figure out where to fit the panniers... an extra seat for Aki could be squeezed in somewhere I'm sure.

It'll have to wait for another adventure I guess, it'll attract too much attention here in Asia.
Anywhere for that matter.

Check out his other bikes. (via D+R)

Colonial Vehicular Vernacular
After a short stroll around the streets of Penang, I'm starting to get more of a feel for the place.
All the different ways people motor here, it's positively an assault on the senses.

Not sure what was going on here!

Spotted this decaying away behind a small mosque. I'm sure the NoH2o crowd would put it to good use.

Could never work out in which country and at what time it was Datsun and where and when it was Nissan... I guess in Malaysia they had both. This old showroom is a Chinese restaurant now.

In Malaysia I've noticed these inner thigh metal wire baskets are de rigueur! Not sure where the crumple zones are in the case of an accident though, looks like it would make a bit of a painful mess. Won't be fitting one of these.

Malaysia is biker friendly. It don't matter what you ride, if its got 2wheels there a many designated areas for you to park.

This 4wheeler with its ingenius gear shifting mod. has the right sticker to park anywhere the owner damn well pleases. May need one of these in the future! Hell my knees are bad enough now to qualify...

You got my number?

Apparently custom number plates are big business in Malaysia, big business that is privatized...
There aren't too many colour options though, but you can have your black and white license plate in any size you could possibly desire.
I'm thinkin' to run into this guys shop tomorrow and ask him to whip me up one with my favorite numbers, not too happy with the number on the bike at the moment.

“Chop chop, on the double... I'm off to the bank to make a quick "withdrawal".”
