nat rocks
Pinnacle Impression
aki pinukles

Natures Window, Kalbarri

この写真撮るとき絶対今崩れんとって!!って思いながら頑張った。
自然っていつ何が起こるか分からんからねー。

Road Report: Australia
Road is straight
From scenic ocean roads following hidden sandy bays to spectacular desert tracks, arrow straight dissapearing over the horizon, Australia, at least the part we saw on our trip, offers up all a motorcycle tourer could want. Not that I would know, I ride a “bloody scooter”.
TermiteMound
Often when we stopped at road houses or scenic areas a small group would crowd around with strange looks on their faces, most were speechless but some, usually a big guy with a moustache, would say “Jesus, its a bloody scooter, what are you doing out here?”
Once we explained our intentions the strange looks contorted into something akin to them watching a horror unfold before their eyes. Usually there were 2kinds of reactions that followed this. The most common was a brief smile before walking away slowly shaking their head, momentarily looking back followed by another shake of the head. The other reaction would be a broad smile followed by a stream of questions then maybe a photo or two. By the time we got to SharkBay we became well rehearsed in giving the answers that produced the most horrified looks. It was fun.
Its these looks that I take away from this trip. A patchwork of petrified portraits.
Over the month that it took us to get from Perth to Darwin we became quite at home on the bike. The first week was the hardest but once all the callouses had formed in the right places it got a lot easier...
Wildcamp
A cruising speed of 65km/h was ideal with no wind. 75 was possible with a tailwind, even more when coupled with descent. Headwinds usually kept us at around 50km/h but coupled with an incline we sometimes dropped to around 40, a good opportunity to take in the view I hear you say. But when 3-4trailer roadtrains are overtaking at around 140km/h it was more than a little difficult to sit back and enjoy the scenery, in fact the only thing that could be done was pray and gently pull on the brakes to avoid being sucked up in its draught.
We averaged about 34km/L on Premium Unleaded, about 30km/L on regular. Not bad when you consider its carrying two of us and our gear.
The roads we stuck to were generally well paved and maintained and offered up few surprises. The tracks we took to were heaps of fun but the corrigations made me a little nervous for the bikes wellbeing. The section from Halls Creek to Katherine was exciting and a little curvey, something that was lacking elsewhere. The quality of the roads changed as soon as we entered NT though, more pot-holes and deep cracks.
wild camping
We mostly camped wild, choosing to ride off the road and find a nice flat area free of ants to pitch the tent. Often we stayed at free roadside camp grounds mostly inhabited by grey nomads but the only time we paid at caravan parks was when we thought we needed a shower... Aki thought I needed a shower everyday though..
Most nights were spent watching the sunset and eating a hot meal cooked in our camp kitchen. Aki has become adept at making superb meals with just one pot, minimal ingredience and our small stove. A long way from the bland rice and sausage Im used to when touring.
All that I expected and more, wish it wasnt so expensive though!
Private Beach

Total time taken = 39 Days
Total Kms ridden = 6114 kms
Total Litres purchased = 191 Litres
Total $ spent per Person = Au$ 960

They're Off
Starting Ks
At 7am on the morning of Wed. April 30, 2008 we set off north under a cloudy sky. We decided to use the trip itself as the test run. This was the first time both of us had been on the fully loaded bike. The hill just outside our driveway isn’t that steep but it is reasonably long for Australian standards, so I figured if we could just get over that then the rest of the trip should be a breeze!!!
Liftoff
I remember seeing in my mirrors, the concerned look on my family’s faces as we slowly moved away and out of sight up the hill. I imagine they still have that same expression even today.
Here we go!
We did highway touring, back-road maneuvering, dirt-track jumping and wet weather splashing that day and the bike held up remarkably well. We had lunch at a road house, tackled our first long road train and had our calls of nature in the great unknown. We cooked over an open fire and slept peacefully in our free campsite.
Everything’s gonna be just fine.
